Barcelona for the NY Times 12

Earlier this year I went to Barcelona with the New York Times Style Magazine, "T," to shoot photos for a travel story. Sadly, the article (and hence my photos) will never run because of staffing changes at the magazine. So I will do a series of posts sharing the photos I took on that trip to Spain this April, 2012.
Nighttime in Sant Antoni.
A child's wonderland in Can Peguera.

Raval after a light rain.
Graffiti once here, now a grey slab.

Me marveling close up at the people marveling at the Gaudi house.

OMG. Barcy brah. Ed, remember that time you dropped paragraphs of musings? yeah, that shit ruled. I like your brain. it's cool.

It's cool seeing buildings of architectural significance with graffiti. Euro life. Like America is only 300 something years old. Shit, even my home town is young. There's a cemetery by my local skatepark that's from the mid 1800's and a lot of the people buried there have significant streets, buildings, and landmarks named after the family that basically established my home town. America is so young. Civil war was only in 1861, 160 years ago. Euro roots run much deeper. over a couple thousand years. Sad that Native culture that emerged has been bleached out.
the image that native americans have is now used to sell clothes and cigarettes.

blue tiles. how old is that building? blue used to be a very rare color since the only way to get the color blue was to mine lapis lazuli from the middle east. like super early christian bibles were decorated with blue ink made from stone.
Also all the influence if Islamic art and mosaics and shiiiiit.
tile mosaics look super sick. I wish my bathroom/home had more tiles.

Why are buildings so cool there.

that park looks great, so many variations. Parks that are built up in areas and have some structural objects are so much more beautiful than the flat ones. And it usually doesn`t feel as crowded.

The blue mural with the wave-like forms are cool. I wonder if that is a synagoge, I see the star of David in there. Religious buildings are often very creative. There are alot of amazing looking mosques as well. They are not alowed to paint objects, animals or human beings so they have developed some amazing patterns.

I`m sure the grey slab looked better with grafitti. Still, it makes for a blank sheet of paper for new graffitti artists to decorate.

That Gaudi house looks like something out of a Tim Burton set. I guess Burton must be influensed from him.

that corner on the last picture is super cool. All these buildings must have been very expensive to build. So many details and special materials. There must have been some very rich people who had them built. How about public buildings? Are there alot of architectural wonders there?

Any remnants of native life are few and far between here, they seem to care more about preserving the early European settlers forts and living quarters than anything which was here before.
We do have the Montezuma "castle", the Casa Grande ruins, and the Navajo monument all in Arizona.
Aside from that we have some caves and fossil beds, but nothing you notice in everyday life.
I wonder how it would feel to go somewhere like Barcelona and be surrounded by history

I'm sure there are more native monuments than that in america, those are just the ones I can think of right now

I made a short skate montage, or whatever you'd like to call it.
This is footage of me from 3 summers ago, I always wanted to film more and make it longer but the weather is too crappy here for me to do that any time soon (plus I am lazy) so here is my sketchy awkward skateboarding...
Posted By: Tenant on December 29th, 2012 at 11:24AM PST
i could skate that curb to box
nice noseblunt!
Posted By: fresh from mex on December 29th, 2012 at 01:03PM PST
i would skate that curb to box everyday*
Posted By: fresh from mex on December 29th, 2012 at 01:03PM PST
Thanks fresh, sadly that box is gone. It was in the very bottom floor of the OHSU parking garage, skating slowly destroyed it and finally someone got rid of it.
It was my favorite place to skate at
Posted By: Tenant on December 29th, 2012 at 01:48PM PST
Dang, Tenant got some skills.Nice vid.

The weather sucks here right now. Super cold with rain and snow.

Can't get bored of Barcelona. Especially if you live where I do. I live in a college/redneck/conservative/gun loving town. It stinks. All the hardcore rednecks think skaters are gay or just weird. But it doesn't even matter what the rednecks think, they can barely count to 20.

My favorite photo is the one with the people taking pics of the Gaudi house. They look so deep into it.

cool video Tenant, good style. And was that a sex-change in the end? haha that trick is funny.

Watching doomsday preppers, those people are pretty crazy. I don´t care how much food you have in your basement. The most violent and agressive people in your neighbourhood will take it from you. And who would actually want to survive an apocapolypse anyway? Life on earth would probably suck balls.
Posted By: emilie on December 31st, 2012 at 07:50AM PST
hey Josiah, we posted at the exact same time!

Happy new year fellow nerds ;)
Posted By: emilie on December 31st, 2012 at 07:51AM PST
Haha hey Emilie!

Happy New Years guys! What are all of you guys doing?
I'm probably gonna get drunk cause I guess that's the thing to do.

One of my New Years resolutions is to meet Ed T! It's long over due. I gotta go to a demo.
Posted By: Josiah on December 31st, 2012 at 07:57AM PST
Damn. Tenant's heel on that double double
fuck the haters.
imma buy you some fuckin nikes cause you Just did it.
I have no footy at all. One day, maybe.

Looks like Antwuan Dixon is on LE. LOL. Dude. that company is so shitty it's awesome.

I don't believe in New Year's resolutions, cause, like ,if it's something you should do. then do it now. don't lag. Josiah, go to Ed's memory foam show.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on December 31st, 2012 at 10:10AM PST
Haha, yeah Emilie, heelflip sex-change. I love doing that trick, they're so goofy.

Louis Theroux has an episode of Weird Weekends about doomsday preppers/survivalists. It was really good.
I totall agree that life would be crap after an apocalypse, you couldn't trust anyone.

And jgonz, lol I know. I almost didn't use it because of my foot touching the ground but fuck it, I am no perfectionist and I hate stairs. Haven't skated something bigger than a 2 stair since.

I can't believe it's new years eve already, this is crazy. I don't know if I'll do anything or not, it kind of just snuck up on me.

Hahaha, Josiah. I've always felt bad about thinking of Texas as a redneck racist/homophobic state. Maybe I was somewhat right.
On another Texas note, have you heard of their plans to secede from the US?

Also, I second that you should go to memory foam. I'm going to try to see it before it ends if I can get my tax return back quick enough

I got my Zine today, the one by Ed and Clint. So good! Ed´s photos are mesmerizing. The one of Ashley getting her makeup done on the cover (and on the last page of Ed´s section) is incredible. She looks so beautiful, and it has a great silent mood.

I really like the ones that have obviously been taken candidly by lurker-Ed. I instinctively start to wonder what the girls are thinking and where they are going. It´s like they are having their own little private moment putting on makeup in public places. I guess it´s sort of a rare situation like that.

The one with the woman that is looking straight in the camera (and she looks disturbed) is funny. It has a different feel than the others. Also the one where the woman sees Ed in her mirror is a bit different, but she looks more suprised to see someone. Like right before she has time to react.

The black and white photo of the woman with a big watch is my favourite. She is the one that I identify with the most. I don´t really know why. It just gets to me.

The part by Clint Woodside is really cool and wonderful. It´s like flipping through someone else´s summer vacation to their almost deserted hometown. It´s almost adventurous.

Great Zine. I love it.

I went for a little hike in the woods not far from here with my dog today. A little in on the road we found some tracks from a dog, and a moose. We followed them far into the woods untill we found the spot where there had been a struggle and the moose had been shot by the hunter.

yea I wish I could go to Memory foam.

Well some parts of Texas are more liberal than others. The majority is republican though. If Texas decides to go solo, I'm moving out! lol

Heck yea,Ed's and Clint's Zine is sold out! Almost everyone that comments here got that zine!

holy shit new brian anderson footage

plus this AWS John Fitzgerald clip is amazing.
2013 is crushing it already
Posted By: Jgonzalez on January 2nd, 2013 at 11:48PM PST
So. It looks like eds paintings ended up in that Judd Apataow movie this is 40 or something.

Kinda fucked that if ed wants to see the movie he has to pay like everybody else and sit in a chair with a candy wrapper stuffed in the cup holder and a sticky floor. LOL. Would it be douchey to let the fellow audience members know your art showed up in a scene by pointing and yelling out "I did that!"
Posted By: Jgonzalez on January 5th, 2013 at 12:36AM PST

Ed. Camo Toy socks.
That shit would fly off the shelves.

Posted By: Tenant on January 6th, 2013 at 01:33PM PST
And I've never heard of John Fitzgerald until now but holy crap, that video was sick too
Posted By: Tenant on January 6th, 2013 at 01:36PM PST
BA's style is so good. Super smooth.

Camo socks would be so awesome! Nobody's doing that. Ed get on that!

Dang that kid from Norway is super good. he kinda reminds me of Blake Carpentar. Hi-waters and everything!
Posted By: Josiah on January 6th, 2013 at 01:49PM PST
YES, camo socks would be pretty sweet.

^ pretty sweet

I would wear camo toy machine socks, I've never owned any sort of camouflage clothes

Does anyone here use 120 film?
I have two rolls of 100ISO black and white Fuji Acros that were accidentally shipped to me with an order that are not going to be used by me any time soon, so they're up for grabs to anyone wanting them.

Posted By: Tenant on January 7th, 2013 at 09:05PM PST
Ed, would you recommend chasing the job of becoming a graphic designer for a large skate company? Is it a good job? It seems like it would be fun, because of the intricate artwork you do for each board... yet it seems like you wouldn't have much to do. Whats your honest opinion?
