4 Decades of both living/dying

Here we go back to Catalina.
On the first day Deanna and I went east/south to the quarry and Seal Rocks (even though it's a Sea Lion colony there) and spotted a small group of Risso's Dolphin. "Length is typically 10 feet although specimens may reach 14.1 feet. This species weighs 660–1,100 lbs making it the largest species called "dolphin". -wikipedia
Its really a great experience being on the small boat and being amongst these creatures.
These shitty photos don't do it any justice.
Little notch in this ones dorsal fin.
Kevin Christy and Oliver Hall help each other with the de-odorizing of each others junk. Gotta keep those dicks smelling nice.
Kevin wanted proof that he was swimming in shark infested waters.
Ashley Snow paddles in for lunch on the beach.
I yanked up this dead Sheep Crab exoskeleton from the sandy bottom and brought it to shore.
Day two, dolphin sighting #2. A pod of Common Dolphin fishing near Long Point.
For reference to all the names I'm throwing out there...
Avalon harbor and the Casino building from above. Hamilton Cove in the back ground, and Long Point all the way back.
The dock at the top left is where we rent the boats from. (And where the Giant Sea Bass was lurking in May.) The house at the bottom left is one of the oldest structure built here. It is currently being remodeled.
Kevin doing some frontside at the decrepit skatepark. Soon there will be a new ramp we hope!
Ashley and Oliver in line for the boat back to Long Beach.
Then my birthday on Saturday. (See Ashley B's photo in IG.) Deanna shot this photo after she spotted the biggest Bat Ray I have ever seen while snorkeleing. 5 ft in length, it had to be over 150 lbs. I also watched a Harbor Seal glide past me underwater, which was quite scary for a second. At White's landing we lounged on the beach an skipped rocks while we stood in knee deep water watching Leopard Sharks slink past us.
Free bowling on your birthday? OK. I was sucking pretty bad.
Deanna was nailing strikes.
Kevin, Ashley B, and Grant at the Casino.
My muse!
Katy Perry came on and the youngin's started to party!
Deanna was waiting for some MJ before she started dancing.
It looks like Ashley is 'ew'-ing Kevin.
"I boned her."
Ashley B stopped by Free Soul Caffe and got me some vegan desserts! Wow! Thanks Ash! We chomped them on the boat ride home.
Kevin got roached.

why do your guys' hands look weird bowling?
Posted By: ryan on July 30th, 2012 at 09:40PM PST
Epic post. no comments. wut. is. happening.

First photo reminds me of the Orange Juice album art for their album You can't hide your love forever. Which is also seen on the album for Chumbawambas compilation First 2. All of this i've learned on Wikipedia. And stolen these albums from the internet.
Dolphins swimming in poop water. but very majestic.

those hills look fun to climb.

Whenever I masturbate in the morning my foreskin kinda smells when retracted for the rest of the day VS inactivity when it doesn't smell as bad. or when you have sex and your fingers stink the next day of female fluid.

Kevin's making a funny swimming face.

Uh oh. Ahsley has a tattoo. and Water shoes.

Yeah. your hand looks pretty jacked in that photo. and that ball looks super tiny.how is garbage managed on catalina? It's funny to think that that ball among many other things are imported. I mean that's true for on land but to think most everything on top of the island was brought and put together.
I haven't gone bowling in forever. I'll consider it for next time I have to date anybody.

That sheep crab looks pretty gross. I can't believe people eat crab too. and also I don't even know how to go about eating a crab. All I think I know is you need dippin' sauces and something to crack their legs open to suckle their meats. fuckit. I don't want to eat dem crabs. I dunno why. but I really like that photo of you bowling. looks cartoony. And compare it to Deanna who looks super concentrated and well dressed.

grant is looking very nautical.
Kevin's crusty toy hat is pretty cool.

Katy Perry divorced Russel Brand.LOL. Russel just reeeeaaaalllly isn't that funny. I dunno. he may be cool in person. I did like that Kiss Me you're an Alien katy perry song. I just liked the bass and stuff. everything but Katy Perry singing.

The person tweeking behind you guys in that couple photo.hm.

Kevin's hair on face is almost equivalent to hair on head. Cool. Don't ever go bald and grow a goattee. shit's gross. Unless you play in a metal band. but still that's fucking gross.

Kevin's iphone @kbargoeshard

That chocolate thing looks super good. is it in a cardboard container, and not foam? I like how some places are just conscious like that.

I haven't seen the new batman. or spider man with skating in it.

Once again, Happy Birthday,Ed.
Hope you enjoyed yourself and don't worry about being 40. Yes, you are aging but you're a brilliant and inspiring person. You've got 40 more years easily to keep wowing us!

Thanks jGonz and ryan. Sorry for the boring post.
Posted By: ed on July 31st, 2012 at 06:30PM PST
Risso's Dolphins have no beaks!!! I never even knew they existed. Ed schools us all the time.

I heard about Great White sharks being in the area of Catalina....Be careful man, that picture of you lounging in the ocean scared me. Even though it's highly unlikely. On the same note I'm pumped for shark week. Anyone else?

Those bowling balls...you could hurl them across the room. Never seen bowling balls that small haha
Posted By: Mike on July 31st, 2012 at 06:39PM PST
Ed....You could have waited for me to post too. Even though I don't matter in the grand scheme of shit.Kidding, not about me mattering, but in all seriousness, I was looking at the post when you wrote that comment I bet. I take a long time to read this. I click all the links and shit, ideas pop in my mind, things happen, I investigate other things....this blog is an experience and it takes me more than 2 minutes for me to read haha.

JGonz- Bowling is fun, especially for a date. It's fun even if you suck. Spider-man was alright, he skated in it which I found hilarious. He did it when he was learning how to use his powers, I think he used an ollie as a means of figuring out just how high he could jump. It was pretty funny. If you like the Batman movies, this one was on par with the other ones, I thought it was really good.

That sheep crab looks like what we call spider crabs around here. Spider crabs look smaller and grosser though. I don't like them cause I'm ignorant
Posted By: Mike on July 31st, 2012 at 06:51PM PST
Looks like you had fun.

That Chocolate vegan dessert looks fucking amazing.

You hang with Comedians?? Interesting.

I don't eat fish or crab. I'm not a big sea food person. My problem is Beef. And that's worse.

So did you already hand paint Art for the winner's of the sock contest?? Or are you gonna paint each one differently pertaining to the receiver??
Posted By: josiah on July 31st, 2012 at 07:52PM PST
I'm still LOLing at Ed bowling.yeah. this one time I went bowling and kept getting strikes with this tiny ball, but they told me to stop using it since it's a kid ball and I guess it can't take much force.

That's super funny. I'm sure somebody was like "well, let's make Spider man figuring out how high he can jump interesting by attaching a skateboard! My son practices his skateboard jumps all the time and can barely get air. So it would be even more amazing!"

Sea food in Texas sounds strange. Weird to think fish is readily available in the middle of the country too most likely. Let 'em swim.

Ed did so much for this post. He provided a map with personal annotations. Biology lesson. Links. Stitched together panoramic photo. I appreesh.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on July 31st, 2012 at 11:35PM PST
haha I imagine they pay a pretty penny to get it delivered in 24 hours. Not really sure where they get the fish from.

Do any of you guys have a Slap forum account?
Posted By: Josiah on August 1st, 2012 at 01:52PM PST
I like this nature/birthday stuff.
And the bowling juxtaposes well.
Posted By: Eggs McManus on August 1st, 2012 at 02:51PM PST
I was gonna make fun of everyone saying "It's the fucking Catalina wine mixer!", but as it turns out, I said it on the post with the giant sea bass. What a fucking loser haha. For real though, I'm getting tired of seeing that comment on instagram from everyone when Ed posts a Catalina picture.

Who decided what photos get to be voted on for the facebook thing? Cause one of my photos is up, but I think my other ones are better
Posted By: Mike on August 1st, 2012 at 09:14PM PST
i heard many many times the 40s are the best years
besides, i dont know of any 40yr old nailing impossible CROOKS!
shit, even impossible noseslides!

traditional catalina post never fails

you and deanna surrounded by dolphins? fucking thrilling!
couldve been worse, though, like they couldve possibly be sharks with freakin lazers attached to their heads

kevin... was that the guy from the good and evil extras?
you all look like yer having a real blast getting wet in the wild waters and shit
my birthdays usually consist of a small group of close special peeps, cake, beer, and lasagna at my home...pretty much like yours without the epic landscape, but im very appreciative even though it may become sort of a routine and it doesnt really bum me out to live/die another year at all,
maybe because im barely 20 odd years.
as long as theres my small tight group of people its all good

kevs ashley and grant no time no see!

how was that katy perry show?
i would like to see lady gaga live, if it was free, just for the show shed give, im not really a fan of her music though
but she did have a crustpunk DOOM patch in that one vid, she totally bought me there.

oh yeah and alaska was definitely an experience.
i worked in a processing plant next to bristol bay, not in a ship.
but i did get to see ships every single day, even that one ship from that show ive never seen "deadliest catch'', its called the time bandit and they brought us shitloads of salmon now and then.

the season wasnt good so we all got laid off sooner than expected, but i did bring home some cash for the rest of the summer.

to work 16 hours everyday is no joke.
woke up at 5am, breakfast at 530, start to work at 6...
end the day at 1030pm and go have dinner asap,
be in bed by midnight, if lucky and quick youd be in bed at 1130pm
repeat for a whole month.

that was my life, which is cool because
it gave me discipline
i met people from all over like the congo, montana, russia, hawaii, sudan, virginia, and some fellow mexicans as well.
and definitely gave me some taste of labor life,
which totally convinced me to stick in college.

glad to see you all!
sorry to hijack your bday post, ed
happy belated b-day again, amigo!

Welcome back fresh!

That sounds so gnar.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on August 2nd, 2012 at 01:00AM PST
I enjoyed this post too.
I´m just a little taciturn, right now.
Posted By: S on August 2nd, 2012 at 07:32AM PST
I love this post, the dolphin shots are cool and I love how you took the time to explain where everything is with the map. Good stuff. Looks like you had a great birthday. The bowling balls are weird and small, are you sure that's not for little kids? Looks like a mixture of bowling and bocca.

Just rewatched Marc Johnsons three segmented part in fully flared. That guy is a wizard. And the whole part is so varied and creative even though it's mainly tech street stuff on little ledges. I had forgotten how amazing that part really was.

Welcome back fresh! That work routine sounds harsh. I definitly admire someone with a work ethic like that. Five day work weeks works just fine for me. Cool that you saw the Time bandit, I watched serveral of the seasons on discovery. Me and my ex got addicted to that show for some reason. Was there a midnight sun in Alaska? There was a street art festival up north in Norway and Stephen Powers aka ESPO made a huge piece about the midnight sun in the summer and the total darkness in the winter. Here's a juxpapose article about it:

there was alot of great pieces created by different artists, I will try to find a better link with a photo series
Posted By: emilie on August 2nd, 2012 at 08:14AM PST
OK I apologize for saying the post was boring. I was just reacting to jgonz saying "no comments? whats happening?"

The place where I am floating is very close to the great white attack that happened in May.

It was mini-bowling, not regular bowling. The pins are connected to wires.

Mike, I was gonna call it a spider crab too, then I started looking it up. Everyone around here on the diving websites was calling it a sheep crab. I would rather say Spider too.

And Mike, thanks for looking at the links and stuff!

I feel like Texas would have good fish. They have a bunch of coastline, has anyone looked at their maps? Big fishing ports on the gulf of Mexico.

Yeah Fresh, that sounds hard. I'm glad the take home message was education! Being bound to work with your hands will be a tough life.

Hi Emilie!

I like that you used to word "taciturn" S!

We didn't see Katy Perry, the band just played a Katy Perry song. Although I heard she was on the island recently doing Karaoke.

No goatees.

I hate the catalina wine mixer comments too. The shop on the island makes a Catalina wine mixer shirt and they sell shitloads of them.
Posted By: ed on August 2nd, 2012 at 12:06PM PST
mega comment from ed!
My bad geography got called out.Ha. And now that I google map it I see that most Texas life deviates towards the coast.
Then I just googled Plainview. Kinda in the bottom middle of the top of the state. Now that I check the map I'm sure the great lakes is a good source of fish too.

Wine Mixer? I don't even know what that is.
just searched that too. Urban dictionary. Step Brothers? i haven't seen that. Movie references.

All the stuff that gets put on the HB beach makes me wonder a bout the water shed and wetlands in that area. Lemme read up on that. BRB

Yea I was gonna ask the same question Jgonz!!Staying on top of all the skate news!

I don\'t know who made that account up, it\'s kinda jacked. It\'s not you,Ed?? Right???
Posted By: Josiah H on August 2nd, 2012 at 10:39PM PST
That account is a troll.

They deleted all their photos.

That person is out to get me. I don't know why.

Just saw your DVD shelf in that interview over at freundevonfreunden.com

\\\"The lives of others\\\".

Just were thinking about our culture and tradition of depressive movies.
If there´s anything german cinema gets some credits for it´s movies about nazis, cancer or other depressing shit. It´s sad.
Just look at Inglorious B.\\\"Ah, deese germanz are still got it\\\"
(In this typical cliche voice everyone outside of germany thinks we germans speak or bark)
Posted By: S on August 3rd, 2012 at 04:52AM PST
Just saw Nina Hagen on some us show from the 80´s and she said \"Schmetterling\" (Butterfly) and that host repeated in a voice that was totally imitating hitler.

Do we sound like hitler?

If so, I will never speak again.
Posted By: S on August 3rd, 2012 at 04:52AM PST
German sounds good to me. I especially like the words and phrases that sound like/explain exactly what it means. Like:
Schmerzen in den Arsch

Welcome back fresh.

I definitely want that vegan cake right now.
Posted By: Eggs McManus on August 3rd, 2012 at 06:03AM PST
S,nah I don't think Germans sound like Hitler. I've never met a true German though.

I'm not even gonna follow that Ed hater. When your as great as Ed, your gonna get a lot of hater's that try to destroy you and make you feel like shit. They'll throw everything they've got till the job gets done. Don't let them see you sweat!

I wonder if there's a way to bring down the account?
Posted By: Josiah H on August 3rd, 2012 at 06:57AM PST
What a sweet list of words, Eggs!

Schmerzen in dem Arsch, ha!
Where did you get that from?
Experienced that on some vacation? I hope not.

Rrrrright, Josiah.
Posted By: S on August 3rd, 2012 at 10:06AM PST
The German language sounds softer in the south than in the north. The Bavarian and Austrian German sounds more like French. But the rest of Germany can sound... not like Hitler... but more harsh. Even English compared to Spanish and French is harsh. The "P" sound in Spanish has no air coming from your lips, but in English it really is like spitting. German has it's own beauty, its very expressive. But it's not smooth and soft. Do you agree S?

Pain in the ass - Google translate.
Posted By: ed on August 3rd, 2012 at 10:58AM PST
definitely one of the longer comments from Ed. That Ed hater follows me on instagram now, I was wondering who that was.

Have you guys been following Danlu and J-lay's insta updates these days? They are in Amsterdam and by the looks of it having the time of their lives. I bet Danlu somwhow got an in at a coffee shop. They made the rules stricter now, you have to be dutch and be some kind of a member at the shop.

I think germans sound pretty good. They have a cool accent. What would Arnold be without his awesome accent, all though technically he is from Austria I think.
Posted By: emilie on August 3rd, 2012 at 10:59AM PST

Arsch -> Arse -> Ass
Word evolution.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on August 3rd, 2012 at 11:35AM PST
German to English when English emerged. Then apply the american accent and Ass is born.
Posted By: Jgonzalez on August 3rd, 2012 at 11:35AM PST
And it really speaks for your travelling experiences and observing skills.
I only can imagine why the north is more harsh sounding then the south.Geographically wise and therefore influenced by it´s bordering countries.
The northern dialect is also influenced by dutch, coming from the times
of maritime trade. The south is closer to france.So...

Yes Emilie.
Arnold is from Austria, so is Christoph Waltz (Ingloriuos Basterds)
and so was that Chaplin Impersonator...

Nice derivation JGonz.
Posted By: S on August 3rd, 2012 at 12:03PM PST
Oh and I really like the scandinavian sound, Emilie.
I would love to be able to speak norwegian or swedish.
It sound so soft and friendly to me.
Posted By: S on August 3rd, 2012 at 12:06PM PST
I didn't see this horrible Ed-hater guy on instagram. I suck at instagram lately.

Thanks for commenting back Ed

Among all the detecting activities, gold detecting is the most interesting one. It can not only relax both our mind and body, but also give us a big fortune if we are lucky enough. Next time when you feel bored, you can pick up a gold detector and have a try.
