i guess your mate is good at shooting so "the kill" was probably super fast and the animal didn't suffer much. also if the lion was still alive it would kill other animals (and not with a clean shot but with lots of suffering involved for the "prey"). "Unfortunately" nature is like that, starving, freezing to death, or getting preyed on isn't nice. but i'm sure that wasn't your mate's motivation for killing. so why kill? it's not new that hunters claim to be "environmentalists", the WWF was founded by hunters. But how hunters would be environmentalist by means of hunting remains unclear. population control? is there a puma overpopulation? and if there was there would be more "humane" ways to interfere. so the reason for killing is obtaining meat? yeah, right. i agree, that killing a puma for meat is more ethical than meat from any form of captive and then slaughtered animal. and your role in the killing was only as an observer, nothing unethical about that. but geoff, what you do promote with that is that killing animals for meat is OK and not something we could easily leave behind us in 2008. also: why trophy hunting? some would call it the patriarchal idea of submitting and conquering "nature" or maybe the far end of consumer culture where you need to OWN something to be able to enjoy it. i would call it "a bit pathetic" (like flaunting one's possesions of bling and cars and "hot chicks"). what does your mate have to prove?
