Barcelona for the NY Times 5

Earlier this year I went to Barcelona with the New York Times Style Magazine, "T," to shoot photos for a travel story revolving around the fact that Barcelona has historically been a hub of Skateboard, Art, and Graffiti culture. Sadly, the article (and hence my photos) will never run because of staffing changes at the magazine. So I will do a series of posts sharing the photos I took on that trip to Spain this April, 2012.

Today's selection will be my favorites from the shoot. (Of course the ones they ended up choosing were NOT these ones for the most part.)

Barcelona over Easter is always great because of the extensive processions that parade through the city towards the main Cathedral.

At Parall-el I shot some skaters.

The Sagrada Familia.

Javier does a 360 flip at the yellow banks in Can Peguera. Javier, Alex and the homies were so kind to cruise around town with me and let me photograph them skating.

I shot loads of photos of this kid both hiding from his friends and watching the graffiti artist Oreck paint. The light was getting dim, and I was bummed that I couldn't get a better depth of field.

Atop the recently opened for tourism Palau Güell designed by Gaudí. You can see the Torre Agbar in the distance.

Yeah, they have a sweet beach there in Barcelona.

A giant chandelier inside the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, or Catedral.

Inside the Palau Güell.

Inside the cloister of Catedral people walk on the graves of past souls, smoothing the stone releifs with thousands of steps.

Barcelona for the NY Times 4

Earlier this year I went to Barcelona with the New York Times Style Magazine, "T," to shoot photos for a travel story revolving around the fact that Barcelona has historically been a hub of Skateboard, Art, and Graffiti culture. Sadly, the article (and hence my photos) will never run because of staffing changes at the magazine. So I will do a series of posts sharing the photos I took on that trip to Spain this April, 2012.

From a distance an interesting architectural sun shade for a plaza, from directly under it a face lit from behind by the sun. Barcelona is filled with delightful human constructions, and may are great for skateboarding.

Barcelona is great for walking around and discovering it's charms.

I hooked up with Alex Castañeda and Javier Sarmiento and some of their friends who agreed to take me around to some skate spots and let me shoot photos of them skating. This is the insanely good Javier on via Laietana.

They changed the Big 4 stairs at the back of the famous MACBA skate spot, but neglected to make it un-skatable, in fact they made it easier to skate, changing it to a nice 3 stair gap. And of course there were kids there skating. This kid is trying a varial heelflip.

Kids skate the newly built steps at MACBA -- or MACBA, depending on the world you are in.

The Torre Agbar is always thrusting into the sky. One-upping London's famous "Gherkin" by being more environmentally efficient.

The asphalt mounds at the foot of Torre Agbar are fun to roll around on with skateboards.

These are the grounds at the foot of the Tower.

Some people use the mound to sunbathe.

Teenagers use the mound for graffiti.

The Botero Cat After the yarn was taken off.

The kitty finally found a home.

Kids playing at Paral-lel. (Say Paral-lel to a skater, it means the famous skate spot, to anyone else it's a street or a metro station.)

Met up with artist RIPO who took me around to some of his murals and the murals of some of his friends.

This is one of RIPO's murals, on the side of a library.

This mural is on the same library, it's by "Aryz" another graffiti artist.

Barcelona municipal conservatory.

The rain was off and on while I was there.

One of RIPO's murals had been buffed.

Saw a surfer walking the streets and asked him for a portrait.

La Mercé, the patron saint of Barcelona, and an annual festival.

A kid watches graffiti artist "Oreck" painting the walls at the famous Parallel skate spot. Although these walls are set aside for graffiti artists, police can and do bust kids for painting on them.

These yarn actions only last a few hours before they are taken down.

Get a photo for your memories.
