You know you are in Europe when they can just advertise an Egon Schiele nude drawing complete with detail vulva outside. We are such pussies in the US.

We were taken to Vienna, one of the best cities in Europe and totally underrated. If you are going to Europe don't sleep on Vienna. We went to "Art out" and see a bunch of shows. This is Deanna, Kevin and I amongst some Chuck Closes.

Questions fron S Van:
Q: Do you feel you have to communicate your work differently when the audience is maybe not informed about all the aspects of your life and where that art comes from?
A: No. I just make work for humans. Ideally they have no idea about the rest of my life. That would be the most pure approach.

Q: And is the jacket part of that language?
A: No. Deanna bought me that jacket a year ago, and as you can see I have been wearing it to all of my openings. I think I used the same one in LA, Gent, and now Budapest. I always dress like a skater, and sometimes it's nice to wear something different. I have a choice; look like a skater, or not. I feel pressure actually to look like a skater, and this very question supports that pressure. I feel like I have to send signals to the skaters that I'm still one of them. But it is that exact reason that I would rather not look like anything, except some random guy.

Q: Like eastern europe has still a more traditional or conservative look on how art and culture is communicated and excecuted including also the expectations how the artist presents himself?
A: I think eastern Europe does have a more traditional approach, but my clothing choice has nothing to do with that. I can wear what I want, the skaters will see my Emerica's with ollie holes and know where I'm coming from. I plan on buying a regular suit soon, too.

The trees were bare, and the stone and steel chilled from within.

The freeze had ended before we got there, but the snow had not yet melted away.

Laci and Matt, two local skaters, were busy hanging the Sleepers.

A photo of Matt B, that is not even in the show, served as the poster. And yeah, Kevin came to get more footage for his film about the lameness of his employer leaving Toy Machine behind to go to Eastern Europe and hang art shows.

This reporter, Hanna, came to the museum for a interview, and upon arrival produced these photos from 1992 when she was a young girl. That is a 20 year old me, and a 14 year old her. This was the TV days, before Toy Machine even started.

She had a photo of Deanna too! New York hat?

The very first thing from the cluster to go up at the Ernst Muzeum, Budapest.

The start of a 1,000 (give or take) piece cluster. And that ladder is the oldest and most dangerous thing I have ever used.

The view out the window was a yellow church.

The director of the museum, Zsolt, took me to a bowl one night, and I borrowed a board from one of the guys and took some rides. I had been to Budapest back in 1992 and 93. And the dudes who own this bowl were there back then. The bowl is very fun, and built by IOU ramps. Deanna shot these from a distance.

Some early skate photos from Budapest featuring Zsolt Petranyi. These are a real treat. Skating in 1976 was certainly happening in California, but absolutely underground in Eastern Europe, and really hard to do in communist Hungary.

in 1976 I was 4 years old, probably sitting in a park watching my dad smoke pot with some dirtbag friends. And Zsolt is ripping a home made ramp halfway across the world.
